A high level of sick leave leads to considerable costs in every company. It costs the economy 60 billion euros a year. The Bradford Factor analysis can help, because often the employer is also involved in the causes of absenteeism. The Bradford Factor helps to find these causes and to take appropriate measures.
This is the Bradford Factor
Bradford University School of Management developed the Bradford Factor in the 1980s. The goal was to identify absenteeism or, colloquially, "skipping work." In other words, to identify employees who take sick leave for no reason.
The Bradford factor is calculated from this formula:
B = A² x G (A = number of absences, G = total days absent).
The variables A and G are to be determined for 52 weeks.
The Bradford factor is then classified into 3 levels:
0 - 200 no signs of absenteeism
201 - 449 first signs of absenteeism
450 - clear signs of absenteeism, urgent need for action by the company
RECOGNIZE ABSENTEEISM EARLY AND TAKE THE RIGHT ACTION
The Bradford Factor recognizes patterns and helps the company to take countermeasures at an early stage. Critics will certainly object that the Bradford Factor mutates into a reason for dismissal. That would be the wrong approach. Rather, a company must ask itself: "What is going wrong here? What are the reasons? What needs to be done to counteract this?"
Often, the reasons for absenteeism lie with the company and should be remedied by the employer. Possible reasons could include:
- Stress
- Excessive demands
- Underdemand
- Poor leadership
- Lack of appreciation
- Private problems
The employer can therefore use the Bradford factor to take appropriate countermeasures. Departmental managers are challenged and should seek immediate discussion with the employee. The result is healthier employees, a better working atmosphere, increased motivation and thus higher productivity. The costs for illness are significantly reduced.

In the "Health" program, individual persons, departments or locations can be selected for evaluation. The new time recording function calculates the sick days, Bradford factor and classification for the selected employees. In addition, the evaluation shows the percentage frequency of absences on the individual weekdays in the past 52 weeks.

In the personnel master you will find a level that shows how the employee's Bradford factor is currently doing. By clicking on the level, you will receive a detailed evaluation of the development of the Bradford factor over the last 12 months. This allows you to see at a glance whether and how the pattern of illness has changed.
